Nominal roll
A nominal roll is a list of an exam's candidates by name, with date of birth, parents' names and centre. Uttarakhand's school board posts them centre by centre.[1, 2]

Quick facts
What does a nominal roll contain?
It depends on who draws it up. The one we read, from the Uttarakhand Board of School Education (UBSE), is headed with the exam's name and date and then runs as a table, one row for each candidate.[1] The columns are serial number, roll number, the applicant's name, the father's and mother's names, date of birth, gender, category fields, disability, the exam centre's code and name, attendance and remarks.[1]
That roll is for one centre, and the board posts the rolls centre by centre.[2] It names children and their parents, so handle a nominal roll like any other student data.
Which boards use the term nominal roll?
We could confirm it at one board. UBSE's page for its 2026 entrance exam lists nominal rolls and admit cards centre by centre.[2]
CBSE's current circular uses a different name for the list a school sends in: the List of Candidates, or LOC. It says only students whose names are submitted through that online process will be allowed to sit the Class X and XII board exams in 2026-27.[3] We couldn't confirm the term “nominal roll” at other state boards or at NIOS, so we can't say which of them use it. If your board or district office asks for one, ask for its format and use that.
Is a nominal roll the same as an admit card?
No. An admit card is for one candidate. A nominal roll lists many. UBSE's page keeps them as separate files for each centre.[2] Our admit card entry covers the card.
Can ProEMS produce a nominal roll?
ProEMS Student records export a nominal roll as a PDF, and a Council List as a PDF or an Excel file. Both show when ProEMS is set up for a school rather than a college, and they are in the Silver plan. We don't claim the export matches any board's format, so check the columns your board asks for against it before you send anything. Our CISCE registration guide explains what we could and couldn't confirm about the term council list.

FAQ
Questions about Nominal roll
Short answers. The sections above have the detail and the sources.
- Is a nominal roll the same as CBSE's List of Candidates?
- As far as we can tell, no. CBSE's LOC is the list a school submits so its Class X and XII students can sit the board exams. The nominal roll we found, from UBSE, is a list of candidates for one exam centre. Follow the name and format your own board uses.
- Who prepares a nominal roll?
- In the UBSE example, the board posts it on its website. We found no source saying how schools or centres feed into it, so we can't say who compiles the data.
